Welcome to Drum Carding 101! Drum carders are one of the most important tools for processing and combining fiber prior to spinning or felting. In this class, you will learn the basic skills needed to use a drum carder. We'll start by talking about basic structure and function of a carder and then delve into some more advanced techniques to create your own carded batt.
By the end of the this class, you should be able to:
Identify the basic parts and functions of a drum carder (including how to apply and remove fiber using the licker-in and doffer pin)
Know how to create roving from washed locks (including flick-carding)
Know how to combine different fiber types using the carder
Know two different techniques for combining color on the carder (including the basics of optical blending)
Know how to clean your drum carder
Materials you will need include:
a drum carder of some kind
a doffer pin or metal knitting needle
a flick carder or cat/dog brush (optional, but useful)
some fiber!
